Mapping Worlds in Role Playing Games

Maps are important to guide your players through the world. Keeping track of where they have been is as much a part of the story as where they are going.

Scales:

Province scale: 1 hex = 1 mile

Kingdom scale: 1 hex = 6 miles

Continent scale: 1 hex = 60 miles

D&D 5e DM's guide suggests using hex paper that has 5mm hexes. (DM guide p14)

Dungeons

Things to consider when creating maps:
  • Map: scale and content
  • Goal or reward
  • Inhabitants
  • Features
  • Traps, hazards and secrets
  • Role play opportunities

Descriptions

Use:
  • Sight
  • Sound
  • Smell
  • Touch
eg: The tavern is dimly list by torches in sconses. The patrons fall silent as you open the door. The smell of stale beer, mixed with a hint of urine, strikes you as you step through the doorway.
